New London gearing up for Firelands Festival

NEW LONDON — The 110th Firelands Labor Day Festival begins at the New London Recreation Park on Aug. 31 and will run through Labor Day.

The midway opens at 6 p.m. Aug. 31 and noon for each day after. The weekend-long softball tournament starts at 7 p.m. Friday.

Admission to the festival is $7 a person, $4 for senior 62 and older and free for those 3 and younger (includes rides). Pre-sale passes are $15 a person, $10 for seniors and free for 3 and under. They must be purchased by Friday at the village office or Gilbert Hardware. Throughout the festival face painting by Pixie Paints, the bounce house and laser tag will be available for additional cost.

Highlights for Sept. 1 will include the Rotary-sponsored parade beginning downtown at 1 p.m. and ending at the park. The horseshoe tournament scrimmage also begins at 1 and the open truck-pull starts at 5.

Sept. 2 begins with sand volleyball at 9 a.m., a worship service at 10, the horseshoe tourney round-robin and demo derby at 1 p.m. and the all-terrain vehicle motocross races at 6:30.

Activities for Sept. 3 start at 9 a.m. with the open tractor pull, the corn hole tournament at 10 and the kiddie tractor pulls at 11. Children’s games follow at 1 p.m., the pizza-eating and cookie-baking contests at 4, door prizes at 6 and fireworks to end the festival at 9. Each day from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., the Boy Scout cabin will be the site of games and the Pine Wood Derby track.

Other weekend activities will include a Friends of the Library book sale under the canopy next to the New London Public Library, with fiction and non-fiction hardbacks and paperbacks available on a donation basis. Also, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church will conduct a bake sale before and during the parade in the downtown area Saturday.
