Mercury offers solid ‘Millie,’ but musical needs tightening

Maybe “Thoroughly Modern Millie” should be called “Thoroughly UNmodern Millie.”

Musical theater fans know that musicals these days tend to be meatier, edgier works with serious themes, sans chorus girls and fluff.

That’s not to suggest “Thoroughly Modern Millie” doesn’t have worth. It’s strengths include lightheartedness, engaging songs that serve the story, a thoroughly driven heroine and an evil woman easy to root against, a la Miss Hannigan.

But did this clichéd work essentially about a small town, naive girl arriving in New York City in the 1920s in search of romance and a new life deserve to be nominated for best musical, much less get the nod in 2002? (“Mamma Mia!” and “Sweet Smell of Success” were the other nominees). 


“Millie,” which opens Mercury Summer Stock’s 2014 season and plays through June 28, is moderately amusing and funny at times. But there’s also unnecessary material in the show.
