This program encourages the students to identify by sight 300 additional words beyond the minimum reading requirement for kindergarten students. This is an impressive accomplishment for any 6-year-old, but it is even more so for an English learner from a Spanish-speaking home.
“He has been working very hard to complete the challenge before the end of the school year. It is exciting to see his hard work pay off,” said Lori Weaver, who teaches music in the elementary school.
Larios is the second English learner from a Spanish-speaking home to accomplish this task at South Central Elementary School. His brother, Marco Larios, also completed the challenge earlier this month.
They were two of only six students who were able to complete the challenge from this year's kindergarten class.
