At a recent state conference, Edison Schools food director Shelly Geason was honored as this year’s “Outstanding Food and Nutrition Director” by the Ohio Association of School Business Officials.
Geason, who’s worked at Edison Schools since August 2013, was nominated for the honor by treasurer Anne Arnold. Superintendent Tom Roth and middle school principal Cory Smith also sent letters of recommendation.
In her nomination, Arnold lauded Geason’s work ethic, creativity, careful spending and successful grant writing to make school meal programs profitable.
“I knew from the moment we interviewed her that she would be the right person to bring our food service department to the next level,” Arnold wrote. “The thing I admire most about Shelly is her commitment to making food service a great experience for our students,” explaining how elementary students’ birthdays are celebrated with special treats, prizes and more. “This ensures that every student is given the opportunity to have a great experience in the cafeteria.”
Geason praised her fellow administrators and cafeteria staff for helping her department be its best.
“To have a supportive administrative team in a school district is a great thing and I truly appreciate my administrative team at Edison,” Geason said. “I simply love my job. But my job is not done alone — I have a wonderful staff that does a great job at all the day-to-day activities that make our program work. I love coming up with creative meal themes and fun food holidays for our students and staff, but it's my staff that actually implements those activities. They are the ‘front line’ and I am there as their support and to ensure that not only they, but our food service program stays successful.”
