The Mavericks advanced all the way to the quarterfinals in a tough competition crowd. A full album of photos from the competition is available at www.Facebook.com/EHOVEworks and is viewable with or without a Facebook account.
Team mentor Jim McIntyre, who also teaches the engineering tech and industrial tech programs, said his team had an impressive run despite it being the first competition season for many of them.
“We started out our season with a very young an inexperienced team but we grew into a confident, highly competitive team. We are so excited about our future,” he said.
Although the official season is complete, the team will attend the state championship and participate in community outreach events in the upcoming months.
If you or someone you know is interested in joining the team, contact McIntyre at 419-499-4663 x266 or [email protected] Being an EHOVE student isn’t required to join. Adults also are encouraged to join as mentors.
The Mavericks also are the house team of NASA Plum Brook station. This formal arrangement will help NASA accomplish its mission to engage, inspire and support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) educational outreach activities, while also providing the team with engineering mentors, tools and parts they may need and the ability to cover the cost of registration at FIRST Robotics events.
In addition to NASA Plum Brook, many local businesses are also important contributors to the team’s success. Sponsors including Sierra Lobo, Bettcher Industries, Riley Contracting, Schlessman Seed and O.E. Meyer also support the Mavericks with funding which allows them to purchase necessary materials to build and maintain the robots each year.
The Mavericks team mostly is comprised of several EHOVE students in the engineering and industrial tech programs. However, McIntyre said many other types of students are welcomed to join including: students from other EHOVE programs, students from other high schools in Erie, Huron and Ottawa counties and home-schooled students.
