Firelands Conference teams dominate Div. III district

GALION — As expected, the Firelands Conference did quite well at Saturday’s Division III district cross country races held at Amman Park in Galion.

Western Reserve and New London finished first and second in the Section 1 girls race, while St. Paul was second in Section 2. The New London boys won the Section 1 race, while Crestview won Section 2.

In the first girls race, Western finished with 59 points to New London’s 63.

Five of the seven runners for the Roughriders finished in the top 16, paced by Ashlyn Barnhart (21:03.9) and Brooke Perkins (21:14.3) in seventh and eighth. Aliyah Perez (21:41.6), Mckenna Woodruff (21:52.5) and Tabi Pausch (21:59) each finished 13th, 15th and 16th, respectively, for Western.

Also for Western, Rachel Herbkersman was 28th (22:41.6) and Madison Weiser (23:59.4) was 49th.

Meanwhile, New London had three runners among the top five, placed by Kaylin Williams (20:00.2) in second and Gabrielle Osterland (20:11.3) in third. Savannah Shaver was fifth (20:51.1).

Also for the Wildcats, Abigail Good (22:37.4) was 26th, followed by Grace Crawshaw (29th, 22:45.5), Dana Gustely (31st, 22:59.1) and Esther Schmidt (38th, 23:24.3).

In the Section 2 race, Woodmore won with 59 points, while St. Paul scored 69.

Lily Dowdell was second overall (19:53.4) behind Huron’s Grace Moser to pace the Flyers. Claire Ceccoli (21:35.8) was 10th and Dana Sumpter (21:48.3) was 12th.

Also for St. Paul, Madelyn McCall (22:23) was 26th and Cheyene Null (22:26.3) was 27th. Olivia Hosack was 32nd (22:52.1) and Alexandra Abel was 39th (23:13.4).

New London boys, Avandano dominate

GALION — In the Section 1 race, it was St. Paul’s Noah Avandano winning the run by eight seconds over second place — as he clocked in at 16:32.

He will be joined at next week’s Tiffin regional by teammate Zack Stine (17:40.1), who finished 14th to earn one of the 16 individual spots as well.

The New London boys dominated the team standings, as five of its seven runners were one spot away from all being in the top 16. It marked the third straight district team title for the Wildcats program, and the 15th overall.

The ‘Cats scored 48 points, as Carson Coey (16:44.4) was third and Curtis Joppeck (16:57.3) was fifth. Tyler Twining (17:27.1) was 11th, Dominic Albaugh (17:30) was 12th and Mitchell Joppeck (17:47.4) was 17th.

Also for New London, Cole Kropka (17:55.6) was 22nd and Caleb Good (18:06.1) was 28th.

In the Section 2 race, Plymouth’s Levi Robinson and Justin Robinson advanced as an individuals by placing fourth (16:59.2) and 11th (17:37.4).


Edison boys, girls advance

GALION — Both the Edison boys and girls teams placed third in their respective Div. II races to advance to next week’s regional.

The 1-2 punch of Daniel Lambert (16:32.5) and Tyler Coon (16:37.2) finished fifth and sixth as the Chargers scored 90 points to finish behind Shelby (37) and Lexington (59).

Jonathon Hrivnak (17:09.4) was 14th for Edison, while Aidan Anderson (17:51.4) was 30th and Dax Austin (18:00.2) was 35th. Also for the Chargers, Gabe Tice (18:47.8) was 60th and Keagan Grames (19:50.8) was 83rd.

In the girls race, Edison scored 106 points to finish behind Lexington (24) and Ontario (70).

Abby Lesniak was fifth (19:30.6) and Isabel Chasney (20:14.6) was 10th for Edison. Paige Schaefer (21:39.5) was 29th, while Katelyn Jeremay (21:56.5) was 32nd and Lindsay Sneider (22:20.4) was 36th.

Also for the Chargers, Isabellah Linder (23:46.5) was 62nd and Mallory Stiles (24:29.5) was 72nd.

Advancing individually on Saturday was Bellevue’s Madelyn Verhoff, who placed seventh overall in 20:08.6.

Norwalk boys advance in Div. I

FINDLAY — The Norwalk boys finished fourth at Saturday’s Div. I boys race at Owens Community College in Findlay to earn a spot at next week’s regional race at Hedges-Boyer Park in Tiffin.

The top four teams and 16 individuals earned spots in the field next week.

Ashland won the race with 55 points, while Defiance (62) was second, Sylvania Southview (63) was third and Norwalk (107) was fourth.

Robert Vazquez was ninth in 16:47.4 to pace the Truckers, while Kyler Kromer (17:05.88) was 18th. Mitchell Sommers (17:19.15) was 22nd, followed by Christopher Mohr (27th, 17:29.12), Cobey Kromer (31st, 17:35.37), Wyatt Hale (46th, 18:15.47) and Jose Dominguez (55th, 18:40.35).

In the Div. II girls race at Findlay, Norwalk’s Abigail Hart was 29th in 23:21.63. Ana Henderson was 33rd (23:41.23) and Sydney Fox (27:22.82) was 62nd.
