DETROIT — University of Detroit Mercy senior runner Sydnie Fetherolf, a 2014 Norwalk graduate, won the 31st annual Running Fit-Titan Invitational, held at Cass Benton Park in Northville on Saturday.

The UTDM women totaled 40 points in the 5k to win its event for just the second time in school history, while Fetherolf became just the third runner in school history to win the host event.

Fetherolf set a new personal record in the process with a time of 18:09, crushing her old PR of 18:36 — which she set when she finished fifth at last year's home event. Her run of 18:09 was also the second fastest ever by a Titan in the event, behind only Kim Hemstreet's 17:58 in 2002, and ranks 21st in the history of the meet.

Fetherolf, the Horizon League Freshman of the Year in 2014, is a three-time Athletic Director’s Honor roll selection.

At Norwalk, Fetherolf won the Northern Ohio League cross country championship race three times and was runners-up once. She was also a regional qualifier all four years of high school, and ran at the state championships as a freshman.

Turner helps EMU to historic win

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — The Eastern Michigan University football team scored its first win over a Power 5 opponent in program history with a 16-13 victory over Rutgers University Saturday at High Point Solutions Stadium.

With the win, EMU beat a Big Ten opponent for the first time in 39 tries, and moved to 2-0 on the season for the first time since 2011. The Eagles had also been 0-58 in their history against Power Five teams entering the game.

Breck Turner, a 2015 Norwalk graduate, contributed to the EMU win. He ran the ball seven times for 33 yards (4.7 average) as a running back, with a long of 10 yards.

At Norwalk, Turner finished his career with 5,682 yards and 79 touchdowns on 567 attempts for an average of 172 yards per game. He holds eight school records and was one of 11 finalists for the Associated Press Mr. Football award after being named the Division III All-Ohio Offensive Player of the Year.

Turner was also a starter on the 2013-14 Division II state championship basketball team.
