ELYRIA — A Lorain County grand jury handed up an indictment against a 33-year-old Elyria man accused of holding his girlfriend hostage all day in their basement.

Daniel Capeles is charged with kidnapping, felonious assault and domestic violence in the incident that happened April 17 at his home on 8th Street between West and Middle avenues, according to an indictment filed Wednesday in Lorain County Common Pleas Court.

Records do not say when Capeles is expected to make his first court appearance.

Capeles took his girlfriend to the basement and held her hostage at knifepoint, Lorain County Prosecutor Dennis Will told cleveland.com Thursday.

He threatened his girlfriend and himself, Will said.

Capeles’ girlfriend later got away and called 911. He managed to cut himself with the knife, but the injury is not considered life-threatening, Will noted.

Capeles’ girlfriend had a swollen left eye lid, a bruise on her neck and bruises on her right and left shoulders, according to an Elyria police report. She also had a bruise on her right thigh and a scratch on her left hip and bruises on both of her feet, the report says.

The report states they got into an argument and Will noted the girlfriend told police Capeles threatened to take his own life.
