Shop Small 'kicks off Christmas spirit' for local shop

Shop Small Saturday is just around the corner and Norwalk has plenty to offer to help the shoppers support their area stores and shop local.

One of the city’s newer shops to the city, Theodora’s Victorian Closet, 28 E. Main St., has some special things planned for the big day.

For starters, owner Teddy Morris said her store will have a “good selection” in the clearance racks, which will include some special bicentennial items.

“And we’ll have Christmas cookies of course,” Morris added. “There may be a few surprises for shoppers too.”

The Shop Small Saturday, taking place this weekend, is combined with the downtown Light Up Norwalk festivities, which will run from 4 to 7 p.m. Light Up Norwalk will include Fireland’s Museum programs, Christmas story readings, s’mores at Berry’s Restaurant, an open-air market, visiting with Santa Clause, lighting of the city Christmas tree and more.

“Since Norwalk combines it with our Light Up Norwalk, (Shop Small Saturday) is a very big event that brings people downtown,” Morris said.

“They’re not necessarily coming just to shop, but for the excitement of everything that is going on,” she added. “It kicks off the Christians spirit. I think it makes people excited to be downtown, whether they’re buying or looking. And of course Santa's going to be downtown.”

Morris said her first Black Friday and Shop Small Saturday last year went better than expected. She hopes for a similar outcome this weekend.

“I didn’t have big expectations for Black Friday, but was kind of surprised with what happened,” she said. “From Black Friday on, it kicked off the season for us. I think people are looking for that beginning excitement — with the lights, music. And even if they’re not shopping, they become more aware of what’s available and the hours of different places downtown.”

The shop will offer extended holiday hours. Theodora’s Victorian Closet will be open from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Monday and Wednesday. Morris said hours can vary to extend beyond those “core hours.”
