St. Paul cruises in FC win at Mapleton

ORANGE TWP. — The St. Paul girls basketball team opened 2019 strong on Thursday, blasting host Mapleton by a 60-32 final in Firelands Conference action at Mapleton High School.

The Lady Flyers improved to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the FC with the win. St. Paul led 12-2 after one quarter, then extended the lead to 29-11 by halftime. In the second half, the Lady Flyers held a 31-21 scoring advantage for the final margin of victory.

Morgan Baxter led St. Paul with 16 points, with Danielle Smith adding 12. Also for the Lady Flyers, Camille Endsley and Megan Hammersmith each scored nine points, while Anna Lukasko added eight.

St. Paul entertains South Central in another FC matchup on Saturday in Norwalk.

PLYMOUTH — The Wildcats claimed a 32-22 FC road win to improve to 5-6 overall and 3-3 in the FC.

For New London, Megan Conrad and Kiaya Thierry each scored eight points, with Lili Bartow and Gabby Ledbetter both adding five points.

Plymouth (2-9, 0-6) was led by Tristen Wiley with eight points.

ONTARIO — Visiting Norwalk fell in non-league action to the host Warriors on Wednesday.

For the Truckers (1-8), Lindsey Koenig hit a pair of 3-pointers to finish with six points and four rebounds. Elena Barber also scored six points, while Paige Maurer added five points and four assists, and Mascie Horner scored five points.

Norwalk is at Sandusky tonight in SBC Lake Division play.

Edison 56, Firelands 50

MILAN — The Chargers rallied from a four-point deficit through three quarters and outscored the visiting Falcons 24-14 over the final eight minutes in Wednesday’s non-league game at Edison High School.

Edison improved to 9-2 overall ahead of tonight’s SBC Bay Division game at Willard.

In the win, Aliyah Caporini scored 18 points to go with four rebounds and six steals. Alana Fidler had 15 points, four rebounds and five steals, while Hannah Vitaz had 13 points and eight rebounds.

WRESTLING

NCS competes at Vermilion

VERMILION — The Norwalk Catholic Schools junior high wrestling team competed at the Vermilion Sailorway team dual Invitational on Dec. 27.

The Flyers finished in eighth place out of 16 teams with a 1-4 dual record. They beat North Ridgeville (24-21), and lost to Vermilion (36-21), Clyde (30-29), Norwalk (42-27) and Fairview (60-24).

 NCS had five restlers compete and go 5-0, includingCasper Caizzo (80 pounds), Quincey Crabbs (110), Andy Meyer (116) and Chase Rospert(122). Logan Risner (134) went 2-3 for the Flyers.

NCS is back in action on Saturday at the Jacob Andrews Memorial Wrestling Invitational at Clyde High School.
