ORANGE TWP. — Senior Jake Griffin threw a complete-game shutout as the St. Paul baseball team blanked host Mapleton, 7-0, on Monday in a Firelands Conference game.

With the win, the Flyers improved to 12-7 overall and 9-1 in the FC. They have won six straight entering today’s home 5 p.m. rematch against the Mounties (4-13, 4-7) — and 10 of their last 11 overall.

Griffin threw 31 pitches in the first inning — but needed just 49 pitches over the final six innings of his three-hitter. He struck out 13 and walked one.

“He started out a little slow, but then he really settled down and took control of the game,” St. Paul coach Jim Carper said of Griffin. “Jake did what a senior is supposed to do — and we played really good defense behind him considering the conditions.”

Offensively for the Flyers, Jude Sweet singled twice and drove in a run, while Noah Good singled and had three RBIs. Kaden Maxwell added a double and an RBI, and Gavin Starcher singled.
