MONROEVILLE — Dean and Ruth Schaffer of Monroeville celebrated their 50th anniversary on June 21.

Mr. Schaffer married the former Ruth Sheeley on June 21, 1969 at St. Mary’s Church in Tiffin, with the Rev. Robert Holden officiating.

Dean and Ruth are the parents of Michael Schaffer, of Castalia; Joanne Schaffer, of Durham N.C.; Daniel (Jodi) Schaffer of Lorain; and the late Kevin Schaffer. They are the grandparents of eight grandchildren.

Dean is retired from Corcoran Tile and Marble Inc., while Ruth is a homemaker.

On June 22, Dean and Ruth celebrated with a Mass at St. Alphonsus Church and then a family dinner at Marconi’s in Huron.

The couple met at the Meadowbrook Park ballroom in Bascom, where there was square dancing. They enjoy spending time together and with the family.

According to Ruth, the secret to their long marriage has been to pray a lot and to learn “when to keep your mouth shut.” Some of the more enjoyable experiences in the past 50 years have been seeing their children grow and graduate from high school and college, and become successful in their careers.
